Over the last few years my eyebrows had thinned out a lot and lost some of their shape due to aging, stress etc. I was initially hesitant to book an appointment with Kim as I had never had any work on my face done before. But Kim very clearly laid out what to expect during the procedure, what she would do and how she would do it to get the best result possible. She was very confident in delivering a really good outcome. So I went ahead. The procedure lasted about 3 hours and while I felt a little discomfort from time to time from the tattoo needle it was not too bad. Kim checked in on me several times to see that I was OK. She really was painstaking in her work and very artistic in her approach. We had to arrange a follow up appointment after 4 weeks to complete the look since my brows were a bit sensitive after three hours of tattooing. It is now about 4 weeks since the procedure was fully completed and the result is really great just as Kim assured me it would be. So if you are unhappy with the thickness or shape of your eye brows I thoroughly recommend Kim. Let her wave her magic wand (ie tattoo needle) and perform her artistry and your brows will look better than ever. Thank you Kim. Will be booking my touch up appointment when the time comes.

What Is Microblading?

Microblading is a type of Permanent Makeup that fills in the eyebrows, removing the need for eyebrow makeup. The application process involves using a hand-held tool that resembles a tiny blade. The blade is dipped into pigment and then gently scored into the skin to create paper-like cuts, depositing pigment into the skin to mimic a single hair. During a Microblading Amsterdam treatment, hundreds of these cuts are made across the brow to fully fill in the eyebrows.

Why I’ve Stopped Microblading?

The following content is based on my personal experience and professional opinion, and should not be viewed as a criticism of other artists who continue to offer the Microblading treatment. These are my own findings and subsequent decisions, and it’s possible that other PMU artists may have different experiences and opinions regarding this treatment.

Formerly Microblading Amsterdam

Between January 2020 and June 2021, I offered the Microblading treatment at my business, which was then known as Microblading Amsterdam. However, during this time, I encountered several issues that ultimately led to my decision to discontinue offering this treatment in the summer of 2021. Some of these issues include:

1. Scarring

One of the most frequent issues I witnessed was caused by other technicians who, due to their lack of experience, cut too deeply into the skin, resulting in permanent scarring. These scars are typically a deep red or purple color and cannot be easily concealed with other permanent makeup techniques. This is the worst-case scenario, and regrettably, it is not an uncommon occurrence.

2. The Treatment Can’t Be Done Multiple Times.

Despite performing the Microblading treatment with a light touch, it became apparent to me that it can only be performed once, maybe twice in a client’s lifetime. Constantly cutting the same area of skin over many years, no matter how gentle the cuts, can lead to the formation of scar tissue. Therefore, at Microblading Amsterdam, I would not perform Microblading on my clients more than twice, including the touch-up.

3. It’s Not Suitable For Everyone

Microblading can only be performed on individuals with young, healthy, normal to dry skin. Any other skin types such as mature, thin, oily, or sensitive are problematic as they cannot withstand the trauma caused by Microblading.

4. It’s Painful

The process can be quite painful as it involves cutting into the skin.

5. Healing Process Can Be Difficult

If the cuts are too deep, the healing process can be severe, leading to the formation of thick scabs.

6. The Strokes Can Blur

At Microblading Amsterdam, I observed that the strokes in Microblading were placed close together to create a full-looking eyebrow. However, with time, these strokes tended to blur and spread into each other, resulting in a Powder Brows appearance rather than the intended hair stroke effect.

7. Longevity

Because of the way the skin is cut during the process, the pigment gets deposited deeper in the skin compared to other treatments that involve an electronic machine. As a result, the pigment tends to remain blurred in the skin for several years. This can be a problem if you want to maintain the sharpness of your hairstroke pattern. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to do hairstrokes on top of old, visible pigment.

8. Creativity Is Limited

Microblading’s hairstroke patterns are quite limiting in terms of creative freedom because crossing or touching the strokes can cause significant skin trauma, leading to pigment migration.

What’s The Alternative?

After my disappointment with Microblading, I embarked on a quest to find a better alternative that would provide my clients with the natural-looking, hairstroke brows they desired, without damaging their skin. That’s when I discovered the HYPERREALISM technique, which was gaining popularity in Russia and Estonia.

Using an electric tattoo needle, the Hyperrealism technique involves creating an eyebrow picture on the skin, resulting in stunningly realistic and gentle outcomes that do not scar the skin. Unlike Microblading, it’s safe to have this treatment multiple times. At the time, only a few artists around the world could execute this technique skillfully, but I was determined to become one of them. Currently, I’m the only artist in Amsterdam offering the Hyperrealism technique, which is highly specialized and suitable for all skin types. It’s particularly effective for those with Alopecia or hair loss due to chemotherapy. This is why in 2023, I rebranded my business from Microblading Amsterdam to Kim Loy Studios.
