Starting a career in permanent makeup can feel exciting, empowering, and full of possibility. But the truth is, for many artists, the beginning is also filled with confusion, self-doubt, and a lot of trial and error.<\/p>\n
I know this because I lived it.<\/p>\n
When I first started in PMU, I honestly thought it would be easier. I had just moved to a new country with a one-year-old daughter. I had no family nearby, no support system, and no traditional job that allowed me the flexibility I needed as a mother.<\/p>\n
So I decided to start my own business.<\/p>\n
I borrowed money from my parents and enrolled in a two-day microblading training course<\/strong>, believing that would be enough to start a new career.<\/p>\n I thought I\u2019d leave feeling confident.<\/p>\n Instead, I left feeling completely unprepared.<\/p>\n After two days in a classroom with around 12 other students, I still had no real understanding of what I was doing. Day one was theory. Day two was essentially: here\u2019s a blade\u2026 now go tattoo someone\u2019s eyebrow.<\/p>\n Looking back now, it\u2019s no surprise that my early results were unpredictable. My healed brows didn\u2019t look like the ones I saw on Instagram. My confidence dropped. Every client appointment felt like an exam I hadn\u2019t studied for.<\/p>\n It was all so much harder than it needed to be.<\/p>\n Over time, through years of practice, mentoring, and teaching hundreds of PMU artists, I\u2019ve learned some powerful lessons that changed everything for me.<\/p>\n If you\u2019re starting your PMU journey, or you feel stuck in your progress, these are the 10 lessons I wish someone had told me at the beginning.<\/strong><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider _builder_version=”4.17.3″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”||12px|||” global_colors_info=”{}”][\/et_pb_divider][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.17.3″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n In the beginning, I practiced on latex almost every day.<\/p>\n But the problem was this: I had no idea if I was doing it correctly.<\/p>\n I would stare at my work and think:<\/p>\n \u201cHmm\u2026 that looks okay?\u201d<\/p>\n But \u201cokay\u201d wasn\u2019t improvement.<\/p>\n The truth is simple: you don\u2019t know what you don\u2019t know.<\/strong><\/p>\n Without feedback, you\u2019re essentially guessing.<\/p>\n Everything changed when I started receiving guidance from a mentor who could review my work and explain what needed to change.<\/p>\n Suddenly progress became faster.<\/p>\n Things that took me months to figure out on my own now take my students just a week or two<\/strong>, because they aren\u2019t guessing. They\u2019re guided.<\/p>\n If you want to improve quickly in PMU, mentorship is one of the biggest accelerators you can invest in.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider _builder_version=”4.17.3″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”||12px|||” global_colors_info=”{}”][\/et_pb_divider][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.17.3″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n Early in my career, I judged my work based on how it looked immediately after the appointment.<\/p>\n And fresh brows can look amazing.<\/p>\n Perfect lighting. Crisp strokes. Beautiful symmetry.<\/p>\n But fresh brows can be deceptive.<\/p>\n The real result is the healed result.<\/strong><\/p>\n Many of my early brows healed:<\/p>\n Too warm<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Too dark<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Too solid<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Too blurry<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n At the time, I thought maybe I just wasn\u2019t talented enough.<\/p>\n But the truth was much simpler.<\/p>\n I didn\u2019t yet understand:<\/p>\n Needle depth<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Pressure<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Stroke spacing<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Pigment choices<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Skin types<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n Fresh brows are only the beginning. The healed result is the real teacher.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider _builder_version=”4.17.3″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”||12px|||” global_colors_info=”{}”][\/et_pb_divider][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.17.3″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n My first PMU course lasted two days<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Two days to learn how to tattoo someone\u2019s face.<\/p>\n Looking back now, it\u2019s shocking how common that still is in this industry.<\/p>\n After the course, I walked out feeling unsure and afraid. I also felt like everyone else was somehow moving ahead faster than me.<\/p>\n But the issue wasn\u2019t talent.<\/p>\n The issue was support and structure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Many trainings deliver information, but they don\u2019t provide:<\/p>\n long-term guidance<\/p>\n<\/li>\n feedback<\/p>\n<\/li>\n repetition<\/p>\n<\/li>\n structured improvement<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n Mastery doesn\u2019t happen in 48 hours.<\/p>\n It happens through practice, mentorship, and time<\/strong>.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider _builder_version=”4.17.3″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”||12px|||” global_colors_info=”{}”][\/et_pb_divider][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.17.3″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n When I first started learning PMU, I spent hours watching tutorials online.<\/p>\n Time lapses.<\/p>\n Instagram videos.<\/p>\n Technique demonstrations.<\/p>\n I believed that watching would somehow translate into skill.<\/p>\n But it didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n Because PMU is a hand skill<\/strong>, not just a knowledge skill.<\/p>\n Your brain can understand the theory, but your hands still need to learn the movement.<\/p>\n Muscle memory only develops through repetition.<\/p>\n Over the years, after teaching hundreds of students, I\u2019ve noticed the same pattern repeatedly:<\/p>\n Artists who practice daily\u2014even for 10 minutes a day<\/strong>\u2014improve far faster than artists who only watch videos.<\/p>\n Watching teaches your brain.<\/p>\n Doing trains your hands.<\/p>\n If you want to get better at PMU, don\u2019t just watch.<\/p>\n Practice.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider _builder_version=”4.17.3″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”||12px|||” global_colors_info=”{}”][\/et_pb_divider][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.17.3″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n In my early work, I made a classic beginner mistake.<\/p>\n I added too many strokes.<\/p>\n I believed that the more strokes I created, the more advanced my work would look.<\/p>\n But the opposite happened.<\/p>\n Those tightly packed strokes healed into something much more solid and blurry than I intended.<\/p>\n Instead of natural brows, they looked heavy.<\/p>\n When I simplified my patterns and created intentional spacing between strokes<\/strong>, everything improved.<\/p>\n The brows healed softer.<\/p>\n They looked more realistic.<\/p>\n They resembled natural eyebrow hair instead of tattooed lines.<\/p>\n In hyperrealistic brow work, gaps are essential<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Less really is more.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider _builder_version=”4.17.3″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”||12px|||” global_colors_info=”{}”][\/et_pb_divider][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.17.3″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n During my first year in business, I offered almost everything:<\/p>\n Microblading<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Powder brows<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Ombre brows<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Combo brows<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Lips<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Eyeliner<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n And while this seemed like a good idea at the time, it created a big problem.<\/p>\n I wasn\u2019t known for anything.<\/p>\n Then I made a decision that changed my career.<\/p>\n I decided to specialise in hyperrealism brows only<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Everything shifted after that.<\/p>\n My work improved faster.<\/p>\n Clients trusted me more.<\/p>\n My bookings increased.<\/p>\n Eventually, I was booked months in advance.<\/p>\n Ironically, I also started working less.<\/p>\n Specialising didn\u2019t limit me.<\/p>\n It gave me focus.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider _builder_version=”4.17.3″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][\/et_pb_divider][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.17.3″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n Early in my career, I rushed the mapping process.<\/p>\n I felt pressure to be quick. I thought being efficient meant being skilled.<\/p>\n But rushing mapping created bigger problems later.<\/p>\n During the tattoo process, I constantly second-guessed myself. I adjusted strokes. I corrected shapes.<\/p>\n Everything felt stressful.<\/p>\n When I finally allowed myself to slow down and spend up to an hour mapping and pre-sketching<\/strong>, something amazing happened.<\/p>\n The tattoo process became calm.<\/p>\n The structure was already correct.<\/p>\n Clients felt reassured because they saw how much care was taken before the tattoo even began.<\/p>\n Mapping isn\u2019t a small step.<\/p>\n It\u2019s half the treatment.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider _builder_version=”4.17.3″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”||14px|||” global_colors_info=”{}”][\/et_pb_divider][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.17.3″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n For a long time, certain skin types made me nervous.<\/p>\n Oily skin<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Thin skin<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Mature skin<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n Each one felt unpredictable.<\/p>\n But the truth is that every skin type simply requires adjustment in technique<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Different skin types need different:<\/p>\n needle configurations<\/p>\n<\/li>\n pressure levels<\/p>\n<\/li>\n machine speed<\/p>\n<\/li>\n stroke rhythm<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n Once you understand this, you stop forcing the same technique onto every client.<\/p>\n And your healed results improve dramatically.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider _builder_version=”4.17.3″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][\/et_pb_divider][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.17.3″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n At one point in my early career, I noticed something frustrating.<\/p>\n My brows healed either:<\/p>\n too warm<\/p>\n<\/li>\n too grey<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n I kept asking myself: \u201cIs it just me?\u201d<\/p>\n But again, it wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n I simply didn\u2019t understand pigment science yet.<\/p>\n Once I learned the difference between:<\/p>\n organic pigments<\/p>\n<\/li>\n inorganic pigments<\/p>\n<\/li>\n hybrid pigments<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n \u2026everything started to make sense.<\/p>\n Combined with proper machine settings and correct depth, my healed results became much more predictable.<\/p>\n Pigment choice is not a small detail.<\/p>\n It directly affects your results months after the appointment.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider _builder_version=”4.17.3″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][\/et_pb_divider][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.17.3″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n When I first started my PMU business, I believed the only way to grow was by working more.<\/p>\n More clients.<\/p>\n More appointments.<\/p>\n More hours.<\/p>\n And for a while, it worked.<\/p>\n But it came at a cost.<\/p>\n My shoulders hurt.<\/p>\n My back hurt.<\/p>\n My energy dropped.<\/p>\n And my schedule stopped feeling like my own.<\/p>\n What I didn\u2019t understand back then was this:<\/p>\n Your freedom doesn\u2019t come from working more hours.<\/p>\n It comes from charging correctly for your skill<\/strong>.<\/p>\n When you position yourself as a specialist and charge premium rates, something powerful happens.<\/p>\n You can:<\/p>\n work fewer hours<\/p>\n<\/li>\n attract better clients<\/p>\n<\/li>\n protect your body<\/p>\n<\/li>\n create a sustainable business<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n Premium pricing isn\u2019t about greed.<\/p>\n It\u2019s about sustainability.<\/p>\n It\u2019s about valuing your time, skill, and health.<\/p>\n Working more isn\u2019t the solution.<\/p>\n Working smarter and positioning yourself correctly<\/strong> is.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider _builder_version=”4.17.3″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][\/et_pb_divider][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.17.3″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n Starting a PMU career can feel overwhelming, especially in the beginning.<\/p>\n But every artist you admire today once stood exactly where you are now.<\/p>\n Confused.<\/p>\n Nervous.<\/p>\n Unsure if they were good enough.<\/p>\n Progress doesn\u2019t come from talent alone.<\/p>\n It comes from practice, feedback, guidance, and persistence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n If you stay committed to improving your technique and building your confidence, your results\u2014and your career\u2014will transform over time.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_button button_url=”https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=frhQy0RKoL4″ url_new_window=”on” button_text=”Prefer to Watch?
