The challenge is that oily skin can be resistant to pigment—it doesn’t hold it as easily, which means you need to get good saturation without overworking the skin.

Here’s what I recommend:

Go thicker: Use a 0.30 to 0.35 diameter one round liner.

Taper choice: Long taper is my go-to, but medium taper can work if the skin is especially thick.

Needle flexibility: Either a flexible (Quadron) or rigid (Vertex) needle can work, depending on whether you’re aiming for crisp or shaded strokes.

For non-sensitive oily skin: You can experiment with 3 round liners, magnums, or flats to get pigment in faster.

For sensitive oily skin: Stick with a one round liner to reduce trauma.

The main goal with oily skin is to work efficiently—get the pigment in quickly without going over the same area too much.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider _builder_version=”4.17.3″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”||8px|||” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_divider][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.17.3″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Working on Mature Skin

I generally class mature skin as ages 55–60 and above, but the real deciding factor is how the skin behaves. Some clients in their 60s will still have healthy, durable skin, while others may have thin, delicate skin that requires extra care.

When you’re working on thin, sagging skin with deeper lines or ridges, you want to keep trauma to an absolute minimum.

Here’s what works best:

Go thinner: Choose a 0.20 to 0.25 diameter one round liner.

Always a long taper: This allows you to work delicately and stay on the skin’s surface.

Needle flexibility: I like a more flexible needle (Quadron) for mature skin.

Technique: Start with the shaded stroke technique. It’s gentler and ideal for delicate skin.

The aim here is to create beautiful, natural hairstrokes while protecting the skin’s integrity.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider _builder_version=”4.17.3″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”||17px|||” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_divider][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.17.3″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”-12px|||||” global_colors_info=”{}”]My Personal Preferences

Across all skin types, I stick to one round liners. I adjust the diameter based on skin type and desired stroke thickness, and I almost always use a long taper. My needle choice between Quadron and Vertex depends on whether I’m doing shaded or crisp strokes.

I’ve created a simple reference table for skin type and needle choice, which you can find in the lesson resources. It’s straightforward because this decision doesn’t need to be overcomplicated.[/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider _builder_version=”4.17.3″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_divider][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.17.3″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”-20px|||||” global_colors_info=”{}”]

If you still feel unsure about executing hairstroke techniques on different skin types, you might benefit from more structured guidance.
